Second Chance Sunday

On Sunday, October 2nd you will have the unique opportunity to give a deserving dog or kitten a second chance to have a forever home.

Adoptable dogs will be brought to the Krepps Dog Park in Suncrest from 1pm to 4pm so you can pet, play with, and get to know them.

Dogs will be provided by the Mon. County Canine Adoption Center and Animal Friends.
This event is sponsored by the Morgantown Dog Owners Group (MDOG) and BOPARC.

Dogs at the event will be available for adoption on site. All dogs will have been spayed /neutered and have current vaccinations. The adoption fee is $85-cash only.

You will also be able to talk with MSNAP, Paw Prints Veterinary Clinic, vendors, dog trainers and behaviorists. Parking for the event is available at the Krepps pool parking lot.

Take this wonderful opportunity to give a happy ending to their story.

Greetings all, and thanks to those who came out for the MDOG meeting last night!

Before the mowing and mulching season gets into full swing, MDOG is going to start the summer early with a CLEANUP of STANLEY'S SPOT this Saturday May 7 at 1pm.

If plenty of people come out, we can make short work of picking up our dogs' favorite spot. If everyone could bring a trash bag, and any equipment you could use (gloves, rake, etc). If anyone has any questions, please let us know. Hope to see you there!

An announcement from our friends M-SNAP:

M-SNAP and Mylan Park are proud to be hosting the first "WOOFSTOCK" to be held November 21st 2009 from 10:00am until 5:00 pm at the Hazel and J.W. Roby Community Center at the South Gate of Mylan Park. We are expecting a large number of people to join us for Dog and Cat related activities. This will be a wonderful opportunity to meet the pet owners of the area.

If you would be interested in obtaining a booth for this event, please email Mr.Sugarbear@excite.com or call (304) 291-0868 (evenings). Booths are 10x10 and the price is $25, electric provided. Tables ($10)and chairs ($5) available for rental. All reservations must be made by November 10th.

M-SNAP is the Morgantown Spay Neuter Assistance Program:

[A] group of hard-working volunteers who desperately want to prevent the birth of future litters of unwanted or homeless puppies and kittens in Mon County. We work toward this goal by funding a county-wide Voucher Program to assist pet owners with spay/neuter procedure cost and by promoting education to the community as a whole, one the benefits of spaying or neutering pets.

This is to remind you once more about our meeting scheduled for Wednesday, September 23, 7pm at the Rio Grande in Sabraton. This is a very important meeting to take on these three areas of discussion: 1, the election of new officers in October; 2, the final wrap up of Krepps Park; 3, the future mission of MDOG. We can't have a meaningful meeting without good attendance, and we can't have a viable group without good participation. Please mark your calendars and also let me know if you will be able to attend that evening. I look forward to hearing from you if you already haven't responded!

New Year, New Reasons to Wag

Although things at the MDOG blog have been quiet, the group has been busy working to bring improvements to the dog parks of Morgantown.

That's right, Dog Parks, as the last few months have seen major advances to the the area we had worked to clear and clean in preparation for the new dog park at Krepp's in Suncrest. Stop by and check it out! Just park by the Krepps Park Pavilion and follow the trail past it and through the trees.

With the "soft opening" of the new park, it was time to give Stanley's Spot a much needed rest, and close it for the winter so that BOPARC could bring in some topsoil and seed for grass and clover. The popularity of the downtown park resulted in a little too much wear and tear, leaving exposed soil that became susceptible to erosion. Hopefully we will soon see a soft green carpet instead! Please do your part to help Stanley's recover, and make sure to take your canine companion(s) to Krepps until Stanley's opens back up in the spring.

We have an exciting year coming up, with activities and events in the works. Stay tuned for more details as they become avilable!

Thanks to many generous contributors, the Who Do You Love? Valentine's fundraiser brought in nearly $2500!

This means that we are only $3500 away from the $11,500 total cost to install the fence at the new Krepps Park site. We are still accepting donations toward the project!

Want to do something Special for that Special someone in your life this Valentine's Day? You know the one we're talking about: the one who always meets you at the door when you come home, the one who is always glad to see you no matter what your mood is, the one who will be faithful to the end. That's right, your beautiful, understanding and always loving companion... your dog!

Do something this Valentine's Day to really show your love. Help us give them a safe place to play, meet their friends and let you watch the fun.

There are 72.1 million dogs in the United States, and over 11 thousand registered in Monongalia County alone. It's our bet that not only do you have one of these wonderful companions, but that you know yours is the best of the lot, right? MDOG shares that love because all of us have one of the best ones as well.

MDOG, the Morgantown Dog Owners Group, are the volunteers who brought you Stanley's Spot off the Rail to Trail, West Virginia's first off leash dog park. It has been so successful, we really need to build a second one. We have the land within Krepp's Park in Suncrest. It's been groomed of unwanted debris, and all we need is your help to fence it and build the entrances.

Here's what you can do:

* You can support a cleanup station on the Rail to Trail or in one of our many beautiful parks for $350

* You can buy a 4x4 tile honoring your dog which will later be displayed in the new park for $25

* You can contribute to the cost of a bench in the park for you and your friends for $50

* You can support our purchase of a flowering tree to be planted in the spring for $150

* You can support our cause with a tax deductible donation in any amount

Or if you really want to do it up right, we will name the new dog park after a significant donor. Give the park a name that will last forever for only $5000 (contact us for more information).

Here is what you do. Print a copy of this message to send to the MDOG address above and check off how you want to support Morgantown's dogs. Include your check made payable to the Mon Valley Greenspace Coalition. Remember, it's tax deductible. If you have questions or need more information, contact us!

Doodle Day Wrap Up

Doodle Day was a great success!

Chief organizer Margaret Atkins reports:

The weather was perfect and it would have been ard NOT to have had a good time. Those dogs are incredibly social, appealing and just plain fun to watch. We counted around 17-20 Doodles and probably 40 people - and nary a cros word, a snarl, growl or complaint amongst them. I wish all the world behaved as well.

Many thanks to Margaret and John Atkins, as well as all the other volunteers and visitors who came out to make this a great day!

Fall is coming and with it comes even more fun for you and your dog!

The Morgantown Dog Owner's Group is pleased to announce "Doodle Day" at Stanley's Spot on Sunday, October 14 from 10am to 12:30.

Don't know what a 'doodle is? They are a mixed breed dog, part of whose ancestry includes a poodle (where the -oodle comes from). First there were Labradoodles, but now there are GoldenDoodles too. (Some history of the breed.)

So, if you have a Doodle, or would like to see and meet some Doodles, come on down to Stanley's Spot on Sunday October 14 from 10am to 12:30.

If Doodle Day isn't your cup of kibble, you can still come on down to Marilla Park later that afternoon for the Mon River Trails Conservancy's "Tails for Trails" event.

Beginning at 2pm - registration from 1pm-2pm - Tails for Trails will hold a Dog Walk from Marilla Park to Stanley's Spot and back (approximately 2 mostly-flat, paved miles) on the Rail Trail. Important details:

* Pre-registration by October 7 is $7 per dog
* Registration after October 7 until the walk is $10 per dog
* All dogs must be leashed at all times, have license and vaccination
* No more than 2 dogs per walker, and no dogs "in heat"
* No aggressive animals (officials have the right to refuse participation)
* The Dog Walk will share the trail with other users - please walk on the right!

The first 50 dogs to register to participate will receive a PETCO neckerchief and "doggie bag" of surprises! Refreshments will be served at the walk's end in Marilla Park.

Dog Park Cleanup June 23rd

Stanley's Spot is ready for spring cleaning!

MDOG members,

Cliff has asked me to "pass the word" that we will have a general "clean up" at the dog park on Saturday, June 23, starting at about 9:00 am (or earlier if we so desire.) Please help us keep our dog park as clean and as attractive as possible. Young and vigorous folks are particularly invited to participate!!!!

Summer weather is here and the dog park is hopping! A few notes:

The new kiosk is roughed in, and should have a concrete pad beneath it soon!

One of the dog park regulars bought a pool and hose, so the dogs have been splashing themselves cool! (thanks Kat!)

Krepps Workday May 5

Call for volunteers from MDOG President Cliff Harvey:

Its Cinco de Mayo and we are ready to rumble. We are on with the Kennedy Center help on Saturday, May 5. Start twisting those arms and go after that extra person group, etc., who are willing to share their muscle for a great cause. We need everyone, and everyone needs to look for someone else who can help. At this point I assume our timetable to be about the same as before (8:30am-3:00pm). We need draggers and mud wadders to keep the Bobcat and chipper humming. If we all come together this time I think we will make a huge dent in stage one preparation. I will get back with specific times and a reminder as we get closer to the day. Think sun, think falling trees, but most of all think how super its going to be soon for the dogs of Morgantown.

New Dog Park in Morgantown!

To all those who have enjoyed Stanley's Spot with your canine companions...

Good news! Morgantown Dog Owners Group is delighted to announce that preparation has begun for a second dog park, located in Krepps Park near the WVU Coliseum. We held our first work day on April 21st, with folks from MDOG, BOPARC and other volunteers pitching in to clear underbrush, saplings and other obstacles. We hope to have the preliminary work done soon, and move forward with fencing and other improvement by the end of the summer.

A report from MDOG President, Cliff Harvey:

To all with aching muscles, the dogs of Morgantown will soon howl your praise. You really put in a day. For everyone who couldn't make it, we achieved a lot, but there is a lot left to do. Please, please try to come out and help us when we set up another date. The rest of us really need the help of young strong bodies. If any of you have contact with a group or students, high school or college, or just friends that will come to our aid, please invite them. Its too hard with just a few people. If this park is going to be finished this summer we need to recruit members and helpers.

More updates coming soon, as well as pictures of us sloshing in the mud during the cleanup.
